HMRC Houston Photograph Collection

MSS 0157 is is an artificial collection created by the Houston Public Library's "Texas Room" local history collections, now housed at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. Like MSS 0114 HMRC Photograph Collection, it contains photos of Houston gathered from various sources. There are 2697 photographs, ranging in date from 1859-1973. Subjects include buildings, cityscapes, and portraits of prominent individuals. Most of the photos are black and white.

Content Description The postcards in this collection predominantly feature the architecture and cityscapes of Houston. Other locations, including popular European travel destinations, are also included. Most of the cards are undated, but those with dates range from approximately 1896-1948, with a bulk of them dating 1900-1929. The majority of the cards have not been written on or posted. Houston Subdivision Collection

Scope and Contents

The Houston Subdivision Collection is a collection consisting of brochures, pamphlets, and plat maps documenting the development of new subdivisions in the Houston area. The boxed material contains abstracts of titles, brochures, lists of property owners, and newspaper clippings. The plat maps are from different subdivisions, each newly created at that particular time. Also included with the plat maps are three Houston street directories and city maps of the 1890s and 1900s.

Scope and Contents

The primary emphasis of the collection is correspondence from the early founders of Texas and Houston, such as Sam Houston, A. C. Allen, J. W. Fannin, and Thomas Bagby. The papers are helpful to the study of the Republic of Texas. They also include many miscellaneous business and legal documents relevant to nineteenth century Texas.

This collection consists of a single unpublished family history entitled "Walls-Patterson-Wallace Hinchen and Allied Families." The manusctipt contains biograpical family profiles and black and white family photographs that detail the family's history from the mid-ninteenth century to 1986. This collection is helpful for genealogy related research on family history in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
