T. D. Howe Construction Company Photographs

 Collection
Identifier: RG D 0084

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 194 photographs of buildings in the Houston area, dating from 1938-1984. In many cases, T. D. Howe Construction Company is clearly identified for their role in building the structures.

Buildings documented in this collection include schools and churches, as well as industrial and commercial structures. Southwestern Bell, Transcontinental Gas and Pipeline Corporation, and the San Jacinto College North Campus are among the clients prominently featured. Many buildings, including several schools, are located Houston's surrounding communities such as Klein, Cypress, Conroe, Pasadena, and Baytown. Most photographs show completed buildings, but others appear in a series documenting the construction process.

Several different commercial photographers' work is represented in this collection. Many photographs bear the photographer's stamp and sometimes their original identification number on the back. A significant portion of the photographs are attributed to William Murdy, but Harry L. Starnes, Milstead-Dixon, and Robert D. Stamm and Company are also among those credited.

In addition, the backs of many photographs feature handwritten notes offering information about the building. Besides identifying the building itself, many of these also name the architect. In the case of handwritten dates, it is frequently unclear exactly what the date refers to. Some dates clearly indicate the time period when a building was being constructed, or the date a contract was awarded. In other cases, it is not apparent whether this information refers to the date the photograph was taken or a date associated with the building itself.

All of the photographs are black and white prints. While most photographs are 8x10", there is also a set of 4x5" prints as well as a number of 11x14" prints.
