Biographical / Historical

Frank Herman Meyer was born September 26, 1877 in New Orleans, Louisiana to German immigrants, Herman and Barbara Elizabeth Birkel Meyer. He came with his parent to Houston between 1894 and 1895 to work as a draftsman. He was employed by architect Olle J. Lorehn and later in the firm of W. A. McMillen. In 1913, Meyer established his own architectural practice, but we know that he was doing work on his own by 1910 (Houston Daily Post, January 30, 1910 "A New Home in the Bute Addition" Edward J. Hogan House, 218 West Main Street, Frank H. Meyer, architect, photo included). He worked individually as an engineer, then for railroad companies and the City of Houston. Meyer also worked for the city’s tax department until his retirement in 1945. He married Carrie Clara Super on June 4, 1902 and they had at least one child, Frank H. Meyer, Jr. Meyer died on April 29, 1947.
