Thelma Smith Photographs

Identifier: MSS 0450

Scope and Contents

This collection contains 42 photographs featuring 29 distinct images. They date from the early to mid-1900s. There are family photographs, as well as images of men in military uniform and at work in the oil fields. Several of the oil field photographs are identified as relating to "where the Fondlen Boiler Blew Up" in Humble in April 1908. Other photographs show groups behind counters where drinks would be served. Named locations include Weingarten's on Preston Avenue (1947), Joe's Place, Sue's Bar on 75th Street, and what appears to be an ice house at Main and Pease (1925). Some of these have a stamp attributing them to The Night Club Photo Service in Houston.

In addition, the collection contains a Weingarten's newsletter from 1945.

Many but not all photographs have some identification. Photographs 1-18 appear to be original prints. Photographs 8d and 19-29 are copies made by HMRC, while most of those originals were retained by the donor. There are two sets of the copy photographs--both prints and negatives.
