Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of correspondence, certificates, and pamphlets from the many cultural and charitable organizations Reyna in which Reyna was active. Their are also numerous newspaper clippings for events Reyna helped organize. Of note are letters and correspondence from Houston politicans Louie Welch and Leonel Castillo.

Biographical / Historical

Mary (María) Torres Reyna was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico on January 13, 1911. By 1922, she was living in San Antonio, Texas and married José (Joe) Angel Reyna on May 22 of that year. After their marriage the couple relocated to Houston, where they lived the remainder of their lives. The couple had five children of their own and adopted three others. Mary Reyna owned a florist and gift shop called Reyna's and became a prominent businesswoman often called "La Reina de los flores" ("The Queen of the Flowers"). Reyna was also a civic leader within the Mexican American Community in Houston. She was an active member in many clubs and social organizations, including several patriotic organizations dedicated to her Mexican heritage. Mary Reyna died in 1987.
