Nell Tucker Hostyn-Serbin, Texas Photographs

Identifier: MSS 1463

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photographic negatives, photographic prints, and correspondence. Focusing on the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn, Texas, the images depict Catholic religious buildings and objects. The photographs were taken by Lt. Nell Rowena Tucker (USN) of Bellaire during a visit to the Czech community of Hostyn--probably in 1941 or 1942. The photographic prints each have explanatory notes on the back, providing information about the development of the community and its religious beliefs. According to the included correspondence, these descriptions were provided by Father Paul Kasper. Many of the negatives lack descriptions, but appear largely similar in content.

Historical Note

Hostyn, orignally named Bluff, Texas, was settled by German immigrants in the 1830s. Beginning in 1856, Czech Catholic immigrants began arriving in the community. Father Paul Kasper renamed the town Hostyn, after a Czech town, in 1925.

In 1856 the Hostyn community members constructed a Catholic church and dedicated it to the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. There have since been several Catholic church buildings, two of which are represented in this collection. The church building extant in the 1940s was built in 1908. A new building was constructed in 1966.

The Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church is located at 936 FM 2436 in Hostyn, Texas.
