Biographical Note

William C. Barbee is the principal architect at Barbee Architects, Inc., an award-winning architecture, interior architecture, and preservation firm practicing in Austin, Texas. Project types include banks, hospitality, retail, and fitness centers in addition to the firm's residential and ranching headquarters projects. Most recent awards include the 2002 Texas Society of Architects Design Award, the AIA Austin 2002 Honor Award, the AIA/Western Homes Design Award, and the 2003 Austin Business Journal Award. The firm's work has been represented in numerous publications, including: Texas Architect, Sunset Magazine, Southern Living, Austin Business Journal, Austin American Statesman, Metal Architecture, Details in Architecture 5, Social Spaces, and The Gateway Home.

William C. Barbee graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Natural Sciences/Pre-Medical in 1973 and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1975. He entered the New York School of Interior Design where he studied under Guiseppe Zambonini, Michael Kahlil and George Ranali. He received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 with a specialty in Historic Preservation and adaptive use.

Mr. Barbee's academic career includes a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Texas A & M University, Lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin and at San Antonio, and Assistant Professor in graduate studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Acquisition Information

The Barbee Family Collection was acquired by Ms. Toni Lambert, Deputy Director of Library Operations, Houston Public Library on July 7, 2006, in Austin, Texas. Items were donated to the library by William Clayton Barbee, Sr., July 7, 2006.
