Mrs. A. T. Carleton Collection

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, reports, yearbooks, and publications pertaining to Mrs. Carleton’s participation in local, state and national women’s organizations. The collection also contains several boxes of photographs of family, friends, and club activities. In addition there are seven scrapbooks containing photographs and newspaper articles.

Mrs. A.T. (Winnie) Carleton was born in Hamilton, Texas, and was christened Winnie Varina Anna Jefferson Davis Snell, in honor of the wife and daughter of the president of the Confederacy. Winnie Snell married attorney Alfred T. Carleton in 1923 after moving to Houston to work in the legal department of the Federal Land Bank.

Best known for her club work, Mrs. Carleton began her activities in 1930 and was president of both The Woman’s Club and the City Federation of Women’s Clubs. She began her work in the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1942 and was elected to serve a two-year term as president of that group in 1962. In addition to holding membership in many other Houston women’s clubs, Mrs. Carleton served fifteen years on the Salvation Army advisory board; was a member of the Harris County Allied Arts Council; and was extremely active in her involvement with the Houston Library Board, her tenure with that group covering more than twenty years.
