Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains tracings, linens, and blueprints of Hare & Hare, a city planning and landscape architectural firm. Hare and Hare worked with Houston's Parks Department and City Planning Department, which resulted in this collection containing plans for most of the city's parks, including Memorial Park and Hermann Park. Plans for several civic projects including the proposed 1928 Civic Center and plans for the improvements along Buffalo Bayou from 1914-1949. The collection reflects the firm's work in school landscaping, including plans for the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and various public schools in the Houston area. Among the landscaping plans for private residences are some notable Houston homes including R. S. Sterling residence and Ima Hogg residence, now Bayou Bend.

Biographical Note

The firm of Hare and Hare, landscape architects and city planners based in Kansas City, MO, was comprised of father and son team, Sid J. Hare and S. Herbert Hare. Formed in 1908, the firm was known for significant projects in Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Fort Worth. In Houston, Hare and Hare was responsible for all park planning from 1923-1960. Hare and Hare executed landscaping plans for notable Houston residences and plat plans for several subdivisions.
