Biographical / Historical

Houston was the first city in Texas to organize a branch of the Young Women's Christian Association. In January 1907, a mass meeting was called at the City Hall to help local women organize a YWCA and 80 women responded. The local YWCA proceeded to take over the "Frances Willard Home", which was started by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1905, and the downtown "Rest and Lunch Room for Employed Girls". The Blue Triangle Branch was founded during World War I to provide a central meeting place for African American women and girls. The Houston YWCA continues to provide services to women and girls across Houston.
