Historical Note
Along with the Houston Post and the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Press was one of three daily papers serving Houston in the first half of the twentieth century.
A Scripps-Howard newspaper, the Press was founded September 26, 1911, and was sold to the Houston Chronicle on March 21, 1964. Paul C. Edwards was the paper's first editor, and George Carmack was editor from 1946 until the closing.
Like the Houston Chronicle, the Press was an afternoon newspaper. At time of its closure, the Press had 320 employees and a daily circulation of 90,400.
