Biographical / Historical

Charles Tapley was born on August 18, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from Rice University in 1955 and began practice with several architecture and landscape architectural firms in Houston. In his independent career, which he began in 1960, he was influenced primarily by the natural world and environmental issues. He was elected to a fellowship in the American Institute of Architects and served as chairman of the Rice University School of Architecture Advisory Council, director of the Rice Design Alliance in 1976, and president of the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center in 1978. He was a vice-president of the Bayou Preservation Association and was a founder of the Bayou Improvement Group. Tapley died on September 21, 2015. The Tapley Tributary of Buffalo Bayou is named in his honor.
