HMRC Photo Collection

Identifier: MSS 0114

Content Description

This is an artificial collection of images documenting the economic and social development of the city, predominantly commercial views, including businesses, street scenes, and people. Most photographs are silver gelatin prints; there are two distinct albums and two photogravure books.

Topics in the HMRC Collection include: business portraits, politicians, sports, Houston Law School, elementary and high school classes, parades, early aviation, Luna Park construction, motion picture theaters, agriculture, beaches, soldiers and military camps, fishing, daily life, wagons, oil, floods, fires and snow storms.

It appears MSS 0114 was an attempt to gather popular and/or historically significant images into one collection. Documentation exists suggesting some small collections were entirely folded into MSS 0114. However, other images lack clear documentation, but seem to be copies of images from other HMRC collections, such as the Houston Post; L.L Walker, Jr Collection; and the Jesse Jones Collection.
