Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 2 boxes with 13 folders of materials related to the Luna family which includes Aranza, Miranda, and Hernandez families. The bulk of the items are dated 1940s. The first box contains immigration papers, passports, employment records, photographs, newspaper clippings, military garrison caps, and a military ring. The second box contains oversized materials including two photographs and one employment insurance policy.

Biographical Note

This collection contains materials related to the Luna family and relatives from the Aranza, Miranda, and Hernandez families.

Benito Miranda Hernandez was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on March 21, circa 1878. His parents were Ignacio Hernandez and Juana Ramirez Miranda. Benito moved to Houston in the 1910s and worked for Texas and New Orleans Rail Road Company as a laborer and blacksmith. He lived in the Northside and Second Ward areas of Houston.

Benito Miranda Hernandez is a relative of Maria R. Miranda Luna, mother to Anna, Lucy, Raymond, Thomas, Edward, Johnnie, and Armando Luna. All of the Luna brothers were in the service, most of whom served during World War II. The Luna brothers also played baseball and softball, and participated in Houston’s Annual Latin American Fast-Pitch Tournament.

Johnny Luna married Alice Aranza Luna on July 21, 1947. Alice was born in 1927 and raised in Houston’s North Side neighborhood, while Johnny, born one year earlier, was raised on the east end of Houston in the Second Ward.
