Schoen Family Photographs

Identifier: MSS 0193

Scope and Contents

This collection contains two photo albums and four autograph books. The autograph books were owned by Bertha Schoen. The photos depict people from the mid-1840s to the turn of the century. You can trace the linage of this family by noticing earlier portraits taken in Austria, in particular the town of Olmütz. Later portraits were taken by studios in St. Louis, MO; New Orleans, LA; Cincinnati, OH; Richmond and Petersburg, VA; Philadelphia, PA; New York City and Albany, NY. Many Texas photography studios are featured as well, such as S.B. Hill, H.B. Hillyer, H. R. Marks in Austin; P.H. Rose and F. W. Bartlett in Galveston; A.L. Washburn and Barr and White in Houston; Petersen’s in La Grange and A. N. Callaway in Columbus.
