Biographical / Historical

The Houston Conjunto Festival, a music festival centered on conjunto bands, began in 1989 and was hosted by Houston Community Services (HCS), a non-profit organization founded in 1974 to promote the social and economic needs of Houston’s Hispanic community. The Conjunto Festival was spearheaded by Rey Rodriguez and founded with Edward Castillo, Joe Molina and relative. It began with intent to document original compositions, recognize musicians in the conjunto genre, and promote the conjunto style of music in Houston. Rodriguez has cited a lack of airtime and acces to venues as the catalyst for the festival. Additionally, HCS sought to record the events, provide each performer with a copy, and promote the use of the tapes in historical and scholarly research.

The first Conjunto Festival was a one-day festival held at Eastwood Park. The following year the festival was moved to Guadalupe Park and later grew to a multi-day event. Since it’s founding the festival has taken place at other locations around Houston including Plaza Aztlan at 5115 Harrisburg Boulevard.

In its 25 year history the festival hosted many well-known acts including Mingo Saldivar, Oscar Hernandez, and the Conjunto Bernal. The last Houston Conjunto Festival took place in 2014.
