Houston Heights Photographs

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0229

Scope and Contents

MSS 0229 Houston Heights Photographs is an artificial collection consisting of 181 images documenting the Houston Heights neighborhood from 1904 to 1975. The collection consists largely of copy negatives and copy prints, many or all of which were likely produced by HMRC staff. In most cases, the donor(s) appear to have retained the original photographs. Photographs 1-8 are original prints, with at least three of these attributed to Frank Schlueter. Pictured in the collection are homes, businesses, the street car, fields, and portraits including group shots.

Images MSS00229-141 through MSS0229-176 differ slightly from most of the rest of the collection. These are original negatives with copy prints. They appear to date slightly later than most of the collection, and focus on street scenes with billboards. It is possible that these images may have belonged to MSS 0227 Matteson-Southwest Billboard Company Photo Collection and been mixed in with MSS 0229.

Historical Note

The Houston Heights is a neighborhood four miles north of downtown Houston. Originally founded as a separate suburb, the original Houston Heights town occupied 1,1715 acres, sat just over 60 feet above sea level, and was divided between residential and industrial areas.

Around 1891 Daniel Denton Cooley arrived to manage the town on behalf of the Omaha and South Texas Land Company. Incorporated in 1896, the Houston Heights grew to include schools, a post office, an opera house, a street car, a sawmill, and other industries. Residents voted in favor of annexation by Houston in 1918.

Arrangement

The photographs have been numbered 1-181, but for the most part no order is evident in this sequence. The exception is the range MSS 00229-141 through MSS 0229-176, which appears to be dated slightly later than most of the rest of the collection, and focuses on street scenes with billboards. Series 1 consists of prints, while Series 2 contains the corresponding negatives.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

A portion of this collection was donated by Sims McCutchen in 1983. Other photographs were added in 1983, but no donor is identified for this second accession. Given that most of the collection consists of copy negatives and prints, it appears that the donor(s) may have provided photographs to be reproduced while retaining their originals. In addition, five photographs of uncertain provenance but related to the Houston Heights were incorporated into this collection during processing in 2019.
