Mary Johnson had an extensive career in the Houston Independent School District in the early 20th century. Material in this series includes lesson plans, programs, photographs, and documents that can offer insights into the histories and pedagogies of Jack Yates High School, Booker T. Washington High School, Phillis Wheatley High School, E. O. Smith Middle School and Texas Southern University.

This collection is open for research. The paddle board is on permanent display at the African-American Library at the Gregory School. Due to preservation concerns, the school ribbon and swagger stick are not available to be accessed.
