Biographical / Historical

The Spark igniting the Southern Africa Task Force occurred in November 1981 when a South African dance troupe called Ipi Tombe came to Houston for the second year. Some members of the community discovered late during their first visit in 1980, that the troupe, was, a tool of the racist South African ruling minority. When they visited in 1981, some members of the community staged a picket encouraging the community not to attend the performance and to make them aware of the conditions of most of the people of South Africa. A foreign affair workshop was organized by the same group the following year and attended by Mickey Leland and other members of the Congressional Black Congress. The actual task force was not created until March 1982 when plans for South Africa-Namibia teach-In were made.
