Biographical note
The self published manuscript was written and compiled by Harold Clayton Catchings. The author was born June 15, 1948 to Harold Edgar Allen Catchings and Ethedia Mae Smith Catchings at the Houston Negro Hospital, now currently known as Riverside General Hospital.
The genesis for the book was a result of the author’s retirement in 2003 and his work on the family tree based on a spreadsheet that contained data on Robert Merritt Catchings and his descendants. Additional information was discovered and compiled by the author through a signed document of Robert Merritt Catchings that named his brothers, sisters, mother, and father. Subsequently the author utilized additional information from Rootsweb and Ancestry.com to fill in the missing pieces as well as consulting with historians in Gonzales, Texas.
The purpose of the book is to disseminate and share the family history with surviving descendants. The author currently lives in Houston, Texas and has founded the National Afro-American Corvette Club, displaying vintage Corvettes. He attends Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and gives back to the community through his Corvette Club.
