Biographical note

The New-World Speller: First book for Grades One, Two and Three was written by Julia Helen Wohlfarth and Lillian Emily Rogers in 1920 and published by The World Book Company. This book seeks to apply to the teaching of spelling and the principles which underlie successful teaching of other branches. The vocabulary begins with the simplest combinations of letters and proceeds systematically from the simpler to the more difficult, and from the known to the unknown.

Wooden log pencils like the Uncle Tom's Cabin pencil in this collection, were used by grade school students in the late 19th to the early 20th century.
