Biographical / Historical

According to the first entry in its minutes, in March of 1949 a "small group of women met...answering the call of Mrs. Lula White. The purpose was to form a Study Club which is to be under the Educational Committee of the NAACP."

Ever since that initial gathering, the members of the Club, which has always been composed of black women, have continued to meet twice monthly to learn, to engage in helpful community projects, and to chat. They read and discussed books concerning the Afro-American experience, donated African art to public schools in Houston, and invited speakers to help keep themselves informed about contemporary events, such as the revolt in Hungary in 1957 and the Klan murders of blacks in Mississippi the same year.

Unfortunately, some of the meeting minutes of the Club have been either lost or misplaced. Members are currently trying to locate them, as well as more photographs of past Club members and other documents relating to its history. In the meantime, however, the material in this collection is sufficient to prove that chatting for an hour can be worthwhile indeed.
