Biographical / Historical
In 1902 twelve black women determined to satisfy their own artistic and intellectual needs, as well as be of service to the needy, by organizing together as a group. Thus was the Married Ladies Social, Art and Charity Club created. Its membership was subsequently limited to seventy "respectable married women living with their husbands in Harris County." Over the years its roster has traditionally been composed of women from the ranks of Houston's black elite.
Unfortunately, most of the Club's records have unintentionally been scattered or misplaced. This is a tragedy, since the Club may very well be the oldest surviving civic organization of black women in the city's history. Members are currently trying to locate and recover as many of the missing records as possible. In the meantime, the documents in this collection, which span the years from 1950 to 1977, amply illustrate the continued dedication of its members to their own improvement and to the betterment of their community.
