Biographical / Historical

Zeta Amicae -- the "Friends of Zeta" -- is a support organization of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, which was formed in 1920 by black college women. The first Zeta Amicae chapters were chartered in Omaha and Houston in 1948 with the full support of the sorority and especially Lullelia Harrison, a well-known Houstonian of considerable influence in the international Zeta family. Mrs. Adelaide Forde, another distinguished local resident, was elected president of the Houston chapter the year it formed and held that position continuously until 1958.

Initially, Zeta Amicae chapters were composed of women who were usually related to sorority members and who confined their activities to direct supoort of Zeta Phi Beta and its program. Gradually, however, the "Friends of Zeta" broadened both their membership base as well as the scope of their activities. In time, membership was opened to all black women interested in community service and sisterhood. Over the years, the Houston Zeta Amicae have provided consistent support to worthy institutions and organizations in the community, such as the DePelchin Faith Home and the NAACP. In addition, they have promoted opportunities for individuals by offering college scholarships to talented young women.
