Biographical / Historical

The Ethel Ransom Art and Literary Club was founded in 1927 to provide black women with a regular forum to discuss art and literature as well as to do good works in the community. Initially the Club met twice monthly - the first time to discuss literature and the second time to study art. Helping the needy, however, was part of the agenda of every meeting.

The first community project that the Club undertook was a petition drive to obtain a neighborhood playground. Subsequent projects included sponsoring classes for young black women in basketry and embroidery, collecting clothing for the needy, and sponsoring girls to a summer YWCA camp. Club members also visited the residents of a home for the elderly as well as a local tuberculosis sanitorium.

The Club eagerly cooperated with other, similar clubs. In 1927, the year of its founding, the members of the Club voted to affiliate with both the Houston and the Texas Federation of Negro Womens' Clubs. In 1933, they joined with another local organization, The Married Ladies Social, Art and Charity Club (see RG E 0046), to sponsor the appearance of a distinguished concert singer in Houston. In these efforts, as in many others, the members of the Ethel Ransom Art and Literary Club sought to live by their motto - "Lifting As We Climb."
