Biographical / Historical

The Texas Association of Colored Women's Clubs was organized by Mrs. M. E. Y. Moore in Gainesville, Texas, in 1905. Black women formed their own organization because they were excluded from the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs.

The Houston Branch of the Texas Association of Women’s Clubs was known as The City Federation of Women's Clubs. The organization of Afro-American women performed volunteer work to offer social welfare and cultural programs to blacks. Although independent of any denomination, its tone was religious. Prominent black women belonged, including suffragette and civil rights activist, Christia V. Adair.
