The Kuumba House Records contains newspaper clippings, a VHS tape, betamax tape, programs, photographs, negatives, letters, flyers, brochures, greeting cards, business cards, newspaper clippings, postcards, and posters related to the performances and marketing of the Kuumba House Dance Theatre and other dance theaters they performed with from 1979 to 2005.

Biographical / Historical

Kuumba House Dance Theatre was founded in Houston, Texas in 1982 by Lindi Yeni, a native of South Africa, to create, teach, perform and preserve the cultural experience of African Artforms in dance theater. The dance company has toured throughout the United States, Mexico and Africa presenting to diverse audiences. Kuumba House was a multicultural center that was created to fulfill a need to develop an outlet for minority artists to showcase and perfect their talent. The dance theatre showcased traditional African Dance, and contemporary dance to over 30 area Houston schools each season. Additionally, they taught youth classes in ballet, modern, African dance, drama, musical theatre, creative writing and visual arts.
