The Kashmere Stage Band (KSB) was a high school jazz funk band from the Kashmere Gardens area of Houston, Texas. Founded by band leader Conrad O. Johnson, he created a blend of funk rhythms with big-band jazz that was unique sound for competitions and live performances. KSB won 42 out of 46 contests in which it participated between 1969 and 1978. The band was voted “Most Outstanding Band in the Nation” at the 1972 All-American Stage Band contest in Mobile, Alabama. In 1973, the mayor of Louvian Belgium International Music Festival Inc. invited the Kashmere stage band to perform in concert with six other bands from the United States. They also toured Japan in 1975. The band recorded 8 studio albums and three 45rpm records between 1968 -1978 before the band ended with Conrad’s retirement in 1978. In 2008, several of the original band members reunited to pay tribute to Conrad Johnson. They played their first reunion concert at Kashmere High school in on February 1 at Kashmere High School. Two days after the tribute Johnson died. The reunion concerts gave rise to the production of the documentary Thunder Soul (2010). Following the reunion concerts, some members of the Kashmere Stage Band Members of the Kashmere Stage Band reformed under the leadership of alumna Jimmy Walker as the Kashmere Reunion Stage Band (KRSB).
